TSA at the DNC, and Conducting Bottle Searches in Columbus; Agency Launches 19 Twitter Accounts
by Ezra Van Auken
At three different locations around the Democratic National Convention, Transportation Security Administration workers plan to assist this week’s political visit, providing security to the travellers. The Democrats will gather inside the Time Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Barack Obama will be giving his acceptance speech at the Bank of America Stadium on Thursday.
According to WSOCTV.com, a local news station in Charlotte, 55 TSA employees “Will help the Secret Service with screening,” which is raising concern among many Americans, due to the rapid advance of TSA agents in public areas around the United States. Just in 2012, the federal agency has been established at Republican candidate Paul Ryan rallies, train stations, the London Olympics and bus terminals.
While expansion is occurring, images of the TSA deteriorate. The agency, a branch off the Department of Homeland Security, has gone through many absurd incidents since the controversial group was created. As SLN reported on July 2nd, 14 TSA workers were fired after drinking alcohol and working their tax-paid-for job. The agency has also come under fire from it’s own workers who claim that TSA agents were taught to racially profile. Just recently, an audit of the TSA led to the hopeful firing of 6 TSA workers and suspension of 14 others after learning workers had not been checking bags.
Despite the lack of professionalism and disapproval by liberty activists, federal officials are now being instructed to check bottles of liquid at airports around the US. A video posted to YouTube (danno02) on Monday shows TSA officials strafing through an airport in Columbus, Ohio and conducting tests on travelers’ water bottles and other cups. The searches were not out of suspicion and appeared to be completely random, revealing yet another advancement by the government.
Interestingly enough, the Transportation Security Administration recently created 19 Twitter accounts including Spokesperson accounts, regional accounts and main accounts. Paul Watson of InfoWars explained, “Although the TSA claims that the new accounts are merely for enabling the public to access information relevant to their local area, only six of the eighteen will be used for that purpose. The rest will be staffed by TSA spokespersons and used to disseminate information about the conduct of the agency, which routinely comes under the national spotlight in a less than positive context.” Showing an attempt by the TSA to re-define any controversial information being said about the federal agency.
